The Conservatives are taking on pop culture in a bid to assert their moral agenda on Canadians.
The minority Harper government has drafted guidelines that will allow it to pull financial aid for any film or television show that it deems offensive or not in the public’s best interest, reported the Globe and Mail today.
Bill C-10 includes changes to the Income Tax Act that would allow the Heritage Minister to deny tax credits to productions deemed “contrary to public policy”. The bill has already passed through the House of Commons, and is currently in third reading at the Senate.
Under new regulations, a panel would review each production and determine whether or not it meets ‘public policy.’ Films or television shows that are found to be offensive could be refused tax credits.
