Bill Siksay’s trans rights bill passes Commons committee

The justice committee of the House of Commons passed a trans rights bill on Nov 2 that is almost a decade in the making. The bill, introduced by New Democrat MP Bill Siksay, would prohibit discrimination in Canada on the basis of gender identity.

This is the third time the bill has made its way through Parliament.

The Commons committee — which includes Montreal Liberal MP Marlene Jennings and the NDP’s Joe Comartin — passed the bill with two Conservative members opposed. It now returns to the House of Commons for third reading. If it passes there, it will head to the Senate for consideration.

Via Bill Siksay:

Great news! The House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice just passed the Trans Rights Bill C389! On a vote of nine in favour (one NDP, two Bloc, three Liberals, and three Conservatives) to two opposed (two Conservatives), the Bill now goes back to the House for report stage and third reading. That should happen in December. One step closer!

This is a developing story.
