Did you hear? It’s spring! Yes, the weather is still well below freezing and the weather sucks, but still. Spring. Yay. But at least spring means Pride season is around the corner!
But of course, not everyone is up on gay pride. People like Bill Donohue, leader of The Catholic League and anti-gay curmudgeon. According to Gawker, Donohue reportedly tried to troll this year’s New York Pride parade by applying to march in the festivities, carrying a sign that said “Straight Is Great!” And also a wedding cake, because he knows you’ve stopped eating carbs and he wants to really rub it in.
Surprisingly, his application actually went through. This was not the reaction he was hoping for.
In order to wiggle out of his duties, Donohue claimed that he would not be participating, as Pride officials were forcing him “to attend gay training sessions” and that these pernicious classes were “mandatory.” How dare they literally force their gay agenda on people!
Except that didn’t actually happen. According to Pride march director Dave Studinski, those “gay training sessions” were less about promoting the gay agenda and more about addressing “line-up times, check-in locations, our moment of silence, dispersal activity, NYPD safety policies, attire and vehicle/sound permits.” Those sneaky gays and their obsession with proper procedure and safety guidelines. How dare us!
Now, is there a discussion to be had about the intersection of homosexuality and religion? Absolutely. But stuff like this pushes us away from that dialogue. Trolling only makes it harder for us to actually discuss the things we need to talk about. And worse than that, now Bill Donohue isn’t bringing a wedding cake anymore! FUCK!
