The Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project is gearing up for its annual Community Heroes Gala this weekend and has announced that the AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton will be honoured with the 2013 Turret Stewardship Award at the event.
In a press release sent out on Monday, NSRAP stated that through “programming developed originally by Evan Poole and more recently by Madonna Doucette, ACCB is focused on providing a safe space for LGBTQ Nova Scotians, streetactive people, injection drug users, and PHAs.” The release goes on to mention the services provided by Poole, Doucette and the ACCB, including educational training, workshops, support for GSAs and much more. Chris Porter, the ACCB’s executive director, is quoted as saying that they are “honored and humbled to receive this award [and]we accept this award with the realization of all the hard work and contributions from many wonderful, like-minded organizations and individuals without which none of this would have been possible.”
Also receiving an award that evening will be the Valley Youth Project, recipients of the Reverend Darlene Young Community Hero Award.

Over on the arts side of things, Queer Acts, Halifax’s queer theatre festival, has put out a call for submissions for the 2014 Queer Youth Creations program.
The annual festival, held every year during Halifax Pride, is hosting a program that gives queer youth a chance to workshop a solo performance piece for that year’s festival. The individual chosen will be mentored in writing, development and much more.
Applicants should be 17 to 22 years old and identify as queer (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirited, queer or questioning). Those who demonstrate that they seek to pursue studies or a career in the performing arts will be given priority. Applicants are asked to provide a personal introduction stating interests and reasons for wanting to participate, a project proposal, a writing sample related to the project, a CV or bio, and supporting materials.
