Here’s why a ‘Rainbow Week of Action’ is planned across Canada in May

Rallies are planned for May 17 in at least a dozen cities across the country, as well as letter-writing campaigns and education events

Iron your Pride flags and get poster-writing—a wave of queer and trans demonstrations and protests is set to take place across Canada in mid-May.

Organized by the Society of Queer Momentum (Momentum) alongside partner groups including unions like Unifor, the Enchanté Network, Fierté Canada Pride and local Pride organizations across Canada, a series of rallies across the country are set to take place on May 17 as part of a “Rainbow Week of Action.”

The week, which kicks off May 11, will also include community education events and letter-writing campaigns targeting members of Parliament across Canada, calling on them to affirm their commitment to LGBTQ2S+ rights.

Fae Johnstone, the president of Momentum, says that with provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan rolling back trans rights in recent months, it’s essential that we demand better from political leaders.

Senior editor Mel Woods spoke to Johnstone about why Canada needs a Rainbow Week of Action now.
