Tom Ford on A Single Man: It’s a “universal story”

Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man hits Toronto theatres tomorrow (Fri, Dec 11). The film comes to Vancouver and Montreal on Dec 25, and Ottawa on Jan 8.

We caught up with Ford, Colin Firth and Julianne Moore at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival in September. When asked about the gay content of the film, Ford said it was a “universal story”:

“While the character is gay, it’s — for me — a
very universal story. That’s one of the things I’ve always loved about
Christopher Isherwood’s writings — his stories are often about gay characters,
but that was not the centre of the story. He treated gay relationships as two
people getting on with their lives.”

When asked about playing a gay character, actor Colin Firth had this to say:

“It’s exactly the same. Love is love. A
human is a human. A relationship is a relationship. You don’t change any part
of your humanity because your partner happens to be of one sex or another. It
made absolutely no difference to me whatsoever. Playing gay and playing
straight — they’re completely irrelevant.”
