RIP Sultanna

UPDATE: Drag queen suffered heart attack

UPDATE: Sultanna’s drag mother Gia Corangie spoke to Xtra about the death of her daughter. Corangie was called when Sultanna’s body was found in her apartment, she had suffered a heart attack and died.

Corangie said that she was waiting for the full coroners report but that she was upset about the false rumours around Sultanna’s death.

“First things first, all these rumours going around town about how she was murdered I want people to put that to a stop because that is not true – she was not murdered, her throat was not slashed,” says Corangie.

Corangie said her drag daughter did a lot to help the community through her role as Miss Gay Ottawa, Miss Ottawa Continental and Miss Capital Pride.

“Anytime she was needed she was always there and I want people to remember her for that. The whole Corangie clan is here for her and we miss her immensely. All 22 of her sisters miss her to death,” says Corangie. “She was just wonderful girl. I want the rumours to stop – please let her rest in peace and stop talking about her.”

There will be a vigil to honour Sultanna on Friday, Aug 26 beginning at the Edge Club. Candles will be lit and friends, family of Sultanna will walk to the Lookout Bar in Byward market.

Monday August 23.

Reports are coming in that Ottawa drag queen Sultanna Corangie has been found dead in her Centretown apartment on Monday, Aug 22. There is no information on how or when she died.

Sultanna was a well-loved drag queen who performed under the tutelage of Gia Corangie. Over the years she performed in Ottawa and Toronto and, in 2009, was voted Miss Capital Pride.

Sultanna was a familiar and friendly face around Ottawa, and the news of her death has stunned people in the community.

Unconfirmed reports say that Sultanna’s landlord was alerted to water flowing out of her apartment in the early afternoon. Upon entry he allegedly found the drag queen dead and notified Ottawa Police Service (OPS).

At the time of writing, Xtra was unable to contact OPS to confirm any details. Xtra will be following the story and keeping readers updated.
