Popping culture: Halifax says “Ask First”

Ah, the summer hit song. Catchy, fun, and rapey? That’s what some people are saying about Robin Thicke’s single “Blurred Lines.”

Over at The Daily Beast, Tricia Romano takes Thicke to task for writing a song that talks about how a girl “wants it” and that “the way you grab me, must want to get nasty.”

Really?

Not necessarily so, say a group of Haligonians.

“Ask First” is a reponse to Thicke’s song written by J. Mary Burnett and Kaleigh Trace (from The Fucking Facts) with lyrics like:

No way to know I want it
Unless I say I want it
Ask first
Consent is sexy
Shows you respect me
I’ll tell you what I need

Smart moves are sexy moves. The video has garnered over 18,000 views in two days, and is also available as a free download on Bandcamp.
