Out in Vancouver: Nov 16–22, 2017

Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, Nov 16

East Side Culture Crawl

With 30,000 visitors and over 500 artists at this four-day event, even Peach Cobblah could find a trick or two and maybe even score an artsy gift out of the exchange. The event runs until Sunday, Nov 19, so this is the perfect spot to do a bit of Christmas shopping — for yourself or that close friend. Visit 80 buildings in the area bounded by Columbia Street, 1st Ave, Victoria Drive and the waterfront. Yes, that’s 80 buildings — only 20 a day. Not an impossible feat, but I never seem to get out of the glassworks studio.

5–10pm, Thursday and Friday 11am–6pm, Saturday and Sunday. No charge. For artists, info and a map check out culturecrawl.ca.

Lights of Hope

One of the high-lights (see what I did there) of the Christmas season is the lighting of the wall for Lights of Hope at St Paul’s Hospital. This is the 20th year for the fundraiser and community celebration, with proceeds supporting the St Paul’s Foundation to assist patients, caregivers and their loved ones. Enjoy food trucks, hot chocolate, fireworks and some of Vancouver’s best choirs as the stars begin to shine brightly. If you would like to see your name or your company’s name in lights with a star on the display, call 604-806-8436.

6:30pm. St Paul’s Hospital, 1081 Burrard St. Free event but donations can be made at lightsofhope.helpstpauls.com. More info at facebook.com/events/1574945402552463/.

Fraser Valley Youth Society Paint Night

Don’t let the title fool you; this is a fundraiser, but it is also an adult event and, yes, the bar is open. I was hoping I could have a few cocktails and let my Picasso out — that’s the artist not my appendage. Fraser Valley Youth Society operates weekly drop-ins for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and allied youth in Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack. By supporting their fundraisers you’re not only out having a great time, but you are supporting these drop-ins continuing for youth.

7–9pm. The Stage In Mission, 32998 1st Ave, Mission. Tickets $47 by e-transfer to nadinevpride@gmail.com or contact through the Facebook page to arrange drop off or pick up. facebook.com/events/1705746409498311/

Slacks

If you missed the original showing, now is your chance. Little Basket Theatre is remounting the original three episodes of Slacks: A Maid’s Tale, Date with a Mascot and The Sound of Femme, which were the original episodes to kick off Little Basket’s most successful stage production to date. Written and directed by Jacqueline Korb, and starring Jacqueline Korb, Taylor Stutchbury, Leigh Burrows and Tara Wilson, with special guest, Joanna Gaskell.

8pm. Havana Restaurant, 1212 Commercial Dr. Tickets $18 at the door; cash only, or online at Brown Paper Tickets. Show runs until Saturday, Nov 18. facebook.com/events/253537271836509

Friday, Nov 17

The Comox Bar Finale

Yes, it’s true; the place where we all set up online dates before giving out our address is closing its doors permanently at the end of the month as the Coast hotel changes over to rental apartments with a smaller boutique hotel on the lower floors taking over the bar, Denman Fitness and the convention area. Send the bar into hospitality heaven with one rager of a karaoke night!

9pm–12:30am. Comox Street Bar, 1763 Comox St. No cover. facebook.com/events/1702594929764207/

Kink Fetish Night

One of the busiest party groups in town also has the distinction of never having me attend — at 6’7 I don’t think anything in the dress code would really fit me: fetish glam, cyber erotic, kinky drag, goth, vinyl, leather or rubber. In rubber I would look like a giant rubber band ready to snap. But others flood this party and have a kinky night including a trip to the dungeon where you can partake or just watch. If this is your first time going to a fetish party, you may feel a bit odd before you enter the club, but believe me that the more wildly you dress, the more at home you will feel once you step in the door of the party.

9:30pm–3am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $20 at Eventbrite or facebook.com/events/1963889633858809/.

Saturday, Nov 18

Pink Broom Bonspiel

Sounds so manly, doesn’t it? A total of 64 players participate in this popular fun bonspiel that includes traditional curling, skins curling, doubles and a draw to the button challenge. The fun continues off the ice as teams compete to earn the most overall points and become the 2017 Pink Broom Champion.

10am–6pm. Vancouver Curling Club, 4575 Clancy Loranger Way. Registration $45 per individual, $90 per pair at prcl.ca/pink. More info at facebook.com/events/172373860008555.

OUT/Vancouver

Time for all the LGBT jocks to join in for OUTWOD’s first Vancouver fitness and workout event hosted by CrossFit 604 and benefitting the Health Initiative for Men (HIM) and A Loving Spoonful. All OUTWOD events are inclusive and open to athletes from all backgrounds, ages, shapes, sizes and skill levels. The workout features high-intensity interval training.

11am–1pm. CrossFit 604, 124 E Cordova St. Registration $25 at outwod.com/events/outvancouver17. Info at facebook.com/events/275643472930819.

Sin City Military Fetish Ball

Hosted by Berlin, Jane Smoker, South East and Venus Kunt, this event promises to be the biggest non-holiday based fetish party of the year. Singles, couples, straight, LGBT, cross-dressers, regulars and newbies are all welcome at Sin City, a safe and welcoming pervy party and play space for everyone. Break out your military gear!

9pm–3am. Vancouver Art & Leisure, 494 Railway St. Tickets $21.80 at Eventbrite or facebook.com/events/1641667712772935/.

Wild Fruit

Very smart of the ladies to host a party on a non-long weekend, so competition is scarce! DJ Miss M spins ’90s to present dance and hip-hop throwbacks all night long.

10pm–3am. Prive Nightclub, 750 Pacific Blvd. Tickets $10–$12 at Eventbrite. facebook.com/events/1923848481268822/

Sunday, Nov 19

Vinyl Record Show

If I knew everything from my youth would be making a comeback I would have kept my bell bottoms and seafarers, plus my denim edition Gremlin. I’m sure every DJ in town will be dropping by to check out the “new” vinyl, so get there early if you’re looking for something specific. Tons of tables with different vendors selling vinyl records, 45s, 33s, 78s, CDs and rock ‘n roll memorabilia. This is perfect for a beginner record collector or the well-seasoned pro. Vinyl records make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries or Christmas — of course as long as you have a record player.

11am–5pm. Heritage Hall, 3102 Main St. Admission $4. facebook.com/events/1513435292049331/

Sanctuary: Soul Music

Alma B Itches and soul music are not two things I would associate; that gurl can’t stand still long enough for soul — or put down the grits. But the old doll has surprised me before, so bring it on, Alma. It’s church night on Davie Street.

11:30pm. 1181, 1181 Davie St. Cover $2. facebook.com/events/1769936639715724/

Viva Argentina

Every November, Caliente Nights dedicates a show to a specific country in Latin America. It would be great if the Junction could match that night with food from the same area; I’m not talking about roasting a cow, but street food in Argentina is amazing. Tonight, enjoy celebrating some of Argentina’s influential stars and its unique iconic music, Tango. Come and be swept into a Latin dream, and maybe a trip to Argentina will be in your future.

10pm–3am. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Cover $5. facebook.com/VancouverCalienteNights/

Monday, Nov 20

Trans Day of Remembrance

The Trans Day of Remembrance commemorates transgender people who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held annually in many cities around the world in November to honour Rita Hester, whose murder on Nov 28, 1998, led to the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Like most anti-transgender murder cases, her murder has yet to be solved. Vancouver’s commemoration takes place at the Carnegie Centre, where we as a community can show our respect and support for trans people in the face of indifference and hatred.

7:30–9:30pm. Carnegie Community Centre, 401 Main St. Free event. facebook.com/events/145553619518654/

Tuesday, Nov 21

PuSh Festival Program Launch

I love film and performance festivals: seeing a plethora of quality work, eating popcorn, skipping work — you know, all the good stuff. What I dislike is going through the programs trying to coordinate times, venues, friends and so forth, so this night is a big plus for me. Not only do I get a preview of the programming highlights, but I will know firsthand all the shows and artists from around the world coming to Vancouver’s festival from Jan 16 to Feb 4, 2018. Plus, did I mention this is free?

5–7pm. Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main St. Free event, but 19 and over. facebook.com/events/131715490810814/

Wednesday, Nov 22

All Our Stories II

Co-hosted by Out in Schools and the Britannia branch of the Vancouver Public Library, come celebrate LGBT lives with an evening of performance, stories and film. A youth event including performances, book speed dating, and queer films. ASL translation provided.

6–8:30pm. Britannia Community Services, 1661 Napier St. No cover. facebook.com/events/132218080871186/

Surry Pride SGM

The Surrey Pride Society is holding a special general meeting to fill up its board of directors. Tyler Sullivan will be running for president. Organizers invite you to come create change and make your voice heard.

6:30–8:30pm. Surrey Pride Society, 10350 University Dr, Surrey. facebook.com/events/1930983030487859/

Snap, Crackle and Pop

Sounds like Mandy Kamp bending over to pick up a tip — just kidding doll, love ya! Mandy might be interested in this event, though; it could start a whole new concept for drag. Time to bring out your whips and enjoy the cracking sound we all love to hear. Please bring safety glasses and earplugs if you have them. Open to people who are new to whips, may or may not own one, are working on acquiring better whip skills, and well-seasoned whipsters. No human targets, so don’t bring a bottom to practice on. Sorry Carlotta, I don’t need you after all.

7–9pm. WISE Hall, 1882 Adanac St. $5 cover. metrovancouverkink.com/happening/november-whip-group/

Drag Queen Bingo and Karaoke in the Burbs

You know when there are certain drag queens who like to chat, so there better be a bar? Yes, this event has a bar. This is a fundraiser to support the Djaeff Mahler Foodbank in partnership with Red Ribbons 4 Life. Myria LeNoir will be hosting the bingo portion and Martin Rooney will be hosting the karaoke portion. Cover gets you one bingo card and of course the chance to sing. Donations accepted all night long — the larger the donation the more cards you get to play with.

7–10pm. Peacock Bar & Grill, 10257 King George Blvd, Surrey. Cover $2. facebook.com/events/109367853116496/

Mr/Miss Cobalt All Stars

Peach Cobblah attempts to stray out of the box again. This time she has taken the past contestants who didn’t make it through and offered them another kick at the proverbial cat. After six seasons and six winners, it’s time to look at the top four who just missed the crown. Starting tonight and finishing next Wednesday, Nov 29, Peach Cobblah and Isolde N Barron, with a panel of judges, will decide who is the first Mr/Miss Cobalt All Star.

7:30–11pm. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $8. Proceeds go to Zee Zee Theatre. facebook.com/events/142407226381598/
