For the first time ever there will be a full weekend of queer parties during Caribana weekend, dominated by the six-party series Toronto Splash.
“Toronto Splash offers a little something for everyone,” says scene mainstay DJ Blackcat.
Toronto Splash was created when Blackcat and fellow promoters Murchy and Anopenmind came together to create a celebration of queer and ethnic pride during Caribana weekend.
The weekend starts with a kick-off party at DNA Lounge (328 Adelaide St W) on Fri, Aug 3 where DJs Bad Breed and Unruly Twin will be spinning for the crowds. Cover is $10 and there will be prizes for best dancehall attire. Doors open at 10pm.
On Saturday night there are two parties on offer. The army-themed Urban Jungle event takes over Suba Lounge (292 College St). DJ Blackcat will be spinning with special guest Atlanta’s ReDICKulous. Cover is $20; doors at 10pm.
Meanwhile over at the Opera House (735 Queen St W) there’ll be a party just for the women. Oohzee will feature DJ Unruly Twin thrilling the crowds. Advance tickets are available for $20 (call 416-662-2585); $25 at the door.
“We want the women to know we’ve thought about them,” says Blackcat, adding that there will be “erotic and exotic entertainment” at both Saturday night events.
Later that night there’ll be an afterhours party at Suba Lounge. Doors open at 3:30am and close at 4:30am; cover is $15.
On Sunday afternoon the Summer Breeze party takes over the Zipperz/ Cellblock complex (72 Carlton St) from 1pm to 11pm. Summer Breeze is billed as the first all-day outdoor queer party during Caribana weekend and is modelled after the blocko and parish parties that are held all over the Caribbean and in black North American communities. DJs will include Cashmere Wray, Verlia and guest DJ KC from Barbados. $15 cover includes two drinks.
The weekend will wrap on Sunday night with a closing night party at Goodhandy’s (120 Church St) with DJs Blackcat, Unruly Twin and Bad Breed.
“It’s going be an amazing event; an event for everyone,” says Blackcat. “Throughout the weekend they’ll have a great experience and want to come back and check it out again.”
Blackcat wants to see Toronto Splash grow over the years to include a film festival and workshops.
