What would we do without Beth Ditto? The southern belle with the barn-burning vocals for disco-punk-blues outfit Gossip recently took sorority-sparkle-pop chanteuse Katy Perry to task. In the July issue of UK-based gay glossy Attitude, Ditto calls Perry’s 2008 track “I Kissed a Girl” a “boner dyke anthem for straight girls who like to turn guys on by making out or, like, faking gay.
“I hate Katy Perry!” Ditto continues. “She’s offensive to gay culture. I’m so offended. She’s just riding on the backs of our culture, without having to pay any of the dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all.”
Gossip is gearing up for the release of its fourth album, Music for Men (Columbia Records), which hits stores Mon, Jun 22. “I think people who are really down are really gonna think it’s funny or they’re really gonna get it,” says Ditto. “It’s really ironic but it’s really true. I think the idea of making a feminist record for men is really cool. Because we already know that we’re oppressed — men need to know that we’re oppressed.”
Meanwhile Perry is allegedly attempting to realize her controversial track. According to Spin.com she and British MC Lady Sovereign were recently mashing lips at a party in NYC.
Hip-hop darling Fergie has also got the media goggling at her performance in The Black Eyed Peas’ latest video for “I Gotta Feelin’” which dropped in tandem with the band’s recently released LP, The END.
It’s your average roof-raising party video — stilettos, sequins, glow-in-the-dark body paint and, of course, scantily clad girls getting hot ’n’ heavy with one another. While Fergie herself dabbles in a little sapphic traffic, her bump-and-grind is hardly gossip-worthy. Predictably, however, the on-screen coquetry has sparked speculation about her sexuality. “Put it this way,” Fergie recently told British newspaper The Sun, “I’ve experimented definitely but I have never had a steady girlfriend.”
Although current headlines are spinning it as a coming-out story, Fergie has spoken candidly about bisexuality since 2007. In an interview with the UK Daily Mirror she stated, “I have had lesbian experiences in the past. I won’t say how many men I’ve had sex with, but I am a very sexual person.”
Allhiphop.com queried her further: “You also spoke recently about being bisexual. Bisexuality and homosexuality are often either frowned or mocked upon in certain circles. Does that bother you?” Fergie responded, “No, it doesn’t bother me. I’m just me.”
Fergie, who hits the silver screen this fall in Rob Marshall’s star-studded musical Nine (Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren) is currently married to actor Josh Duhamel, who reprises his role as Captain William Lennox in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen later this month.
Also awaiting Transformers’ red-carpet premiere is the flick’s mouthy leading lady, 23-year-old Megan Fox. Notorious for the chasm of unpredictability that gapes every time she opens her mouth — she’s always either wildly offensive or bold and smart — Fox’s July interview with GQ is, unfortunately, an oops-I-did-it-again moment. The zinger comes during Fox’s discussion of her recent bout with depression instigated by the fear that her success stemmed solely from her, ahem, smashing good looks. “Really my only job is to look attractive. I was so angry about that, that I went in the opposite direction. I turned into a really butch bull dyke for, like, six months…. Then I went in the other direction. From being a giant motorcycle-riding lesbian, I turned into a zombie. I lost, like, 30 pounds.”
Please shut the fuck up.
Lastly, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert has come barrelling out in the latest issue of Rolling Stone. “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear I’m gay,” says the 27-year-old. “I’ve been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I’ve been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner.”
Though Lambert, who just signed with 19 Recordings/RCA, was out and proud behind the scenes with Idol contestants and producers, he expressly decided to wait on telling the media until after the eighth season wrapped. “I was worried that [coming out] would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing,” he says. “I’m an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. It shouldn’t matter. Except it does. It’s really confusing.”
With his debut album set to drop this fall, Lambert will spend the summer recording in between American Idol Live tour dates and, of course, catching up with boyfriend Drake LaBry. “I’m proud of my sexuality,” says Lambert. “I embrace it. It’s just another part of me.”
