Gay of the day: Jesus Christ

Jesus being baptized by John. Painting by Harry Anderson.

“At that time, standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”

John 19:25-27

“Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?”

John 21:20

Was Jesus Christ gay? Probably. Jesus was a Hebrew rabbi who was unmarried, which was very unusual. That he was romantically involved with Mary Magdalene has not been proven and is based on no historical or biblical evidence. There is, however, affirmation of Jesus’s relationship with John, the only apostle, and the only man, to accompany him to his crucifixion. John was the only apostle Jesus “followed,” they are often portrayed in art being physically intimate, and their bond was so strong that Jesus asked his mother to love John like her own son and for John to look after her like his own mother. He did not make this request for Mary Magdalene, his supposed lover. To me, this proves that Jesus’s love for John went beyond friendship or brotherhood. It was the deepest love he knew.
