Vancouver guide to New Year’s Eve

Survive the big night by planning ahead

2016 is just around the corner which means the scramble to find the perfect New Year’s Eve plan is officially on. For some, New Year’s marks the start of resolutions, and to others it means spending Jan 1 in bed nursing a hangover. Whether you’re toasting good things to come or celebrating another year gone by, it’s important to have a game plan come Dec 31. If you’re still unsure of how to spend your night, here are a few options to help you decide.

If you’re going out for New Year’s Eve you need to commit — go big or go home. You’ve worked hard this year and it’s about time you reward yourself. You can do just that with a weekend pass to The Odyssey for access to a full weekend of celebration.

Ring in 2016 at Glam Ball with New York DJ Colby B, while surrounded by confetti and of course — naked men! New Year’s Eve conveniently falls on a Thursday this year which means it’s Shower Power at The Odyssey. Countdown to midnight with free champagne and a complimentary Glam Ball champagne flute alongside a shower full of sexy studs. The party keeps getting hotter after midnight as professional fire spinner Shine Davine takes the stage.

Your pass also includes access to Friday’s Glow Party and crowd favourite O Saturday for three days of celebration. According to organizers, “The Odyssey is hoping to throw the most extravagant gay NYE event in Vancouver.” Take advantage of 15 percent off your tickets with promo code “xtra15” here.

Stay in and host the party yourself
Your place

Nobody can blame you for wanting to avoid the hassle of going out on Dec 31. Save money and skip the lines by hosting the party yourself! Hit the dollar store for some shot glasses, party hats, streamers and noisemakers. Just make sure you have a solid clean-up crew ready to go in the morning . . . On second thought, you might be better off convincing a friend to host it at their place.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly alternative your best bet is to join the Vancouver New Year’s Eve Celebration Society. Join thousands of others outdoors at the city’s first free downtown New Year’s Eve party in over a decade. Festivities begin at 6pm on Canada Place Way for an evening of live music, food trucks and entertainment. The countdown will be immediately followed by a fireworks display launched from a barge in Coal Harbour.

Get some exercise

Don’t laugh — this is a real option. While a midnight jog might not seem like the most festive way to celebrate 2016, it’s certainly a healthier alternative. The trend of NYE midnight fun runs is catching on and they’re a great way to prove you’re not all talk. Get a start on those resolutions right away before you give up on them in February.

Or just go to bed . . .

This option is pretty simple. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious you can pour yourself a big glass of wine and turn on some local countdown coverage. Realistically Dec 31st is just another night in the year so you might as well skip the hangover and opt for a good book.
