UK blocks bill to pardon gay men
The UK’s justice minister used parliamentary procedure on Friday to block a bill that would have automatically pardoned all men prosecuted for being gay. The minister said the government worried the bill would pardon people whose crimes included non-consensual or underage sex. The government still supports a bill that would allow men to apply for a pardon.
Six percent of Europeans say they are LGBT
In a study by Dalia Research, six percent of Europeans identified as LGBT. The results varied heavily by country, with over seven percent in Germany and less than two in Hungary. Young people were slightly more likely to identify as gay, but much more likely to identify as bisexual or only mostly straight. Meanwhile, gay rights organization ILGA-Europe said at a conference this week that a conservative backlash is growing against LGBT Europeans.
Second patient on PrEP gets HIV
In an interview with The Body, a doctor has reported the second worldwide case of a patient on PrEP being infected with HIV. Tests showed the infection was by a rare strain of HIV resistant to PrEP drugs. Doctors estimate 100,000 people have used PrEP, making it still a highly effective prevention measure.
US CDC reports STI spike
According the the United States Centre for Disease Control, last year had the most STI infections on record. Rates are highest among young people, minorities and men who have sex with men. While some researchers say the spike may have to do with cuts to prevention programs or online hookup apps, it may simply be the result of better testing procedures that are catching more cases.
One third of people globally support same-sex marriage
According to an international study of almost 100,000 people around the world, nearly a third now say same-sex marriage should be legal. A plurality of 45 percent said it should not be, while 23 percent said they did not know.
