Belgrade holds third Pride under heavy guard

About 5,000 police officers escorted the third Serbian Pride parade through the streets of Belgrade on Sept 18, 2016, protecting marchers and a handful of politicians who joined in. Previous parades in 2001 and 2010 were marred by violent protests.

First royal comes out

Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten has come out as bisexual, the first royal to be openly LGBT. He introduced his new boyfriend, whom he met on a skiing trip, to the Daily Mail. Mountbatten was previously married to a woman, and has three daughters.

Transparent director: ‘Topple the patriarchy’

In a speech accepting an Emmy for her show Transparent, about a trans woman, director Jill Soloway applauded the queer and trans people whose stories she tells, and ended with a rousing call to “topple the patriarchy.”

Rome’s first civil union

Almost three months after the Italian government legalized same-sex unions, the first has taken place in Rome, the seat of the Catholic church. The ceremony was officiated by Rome’s newly elected mayor.
