On Thursday, March 10, 2016, Dining Out For Life returns for its 22nd year in support of individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses in British Columbia
Since 1994, hundreds of restaurants have participated in the event, from Whistler to White Rock and across Metro Vancouver. Participating restaurants agree to donate 25 percent of one day’s food sales to local, registered not-for-profit organizations Friends For Life and A Loving Spoonful.
While the event is held in cities all across North America, the Vancouver chapter is particularly significant. In 2011, the Public Health Agency of Canada estimated there were 71,300 people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada, with over 25 percent of this population residing in BC. In addition, Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside maintains the highest HIV rates in the Western world, reaching as high as 27 percent.
Friends For Life and A Loving Spoonful offer wellness programs, support services and home-delivered meals free of charge to people living with HIV/AIDS and other, co-existing illnesses.
Together the groups offer nutritional counseling and meal planning, as well as over 60 support therapies including therapeutic massage, naturopathy, music therapy and yoga. They also provide end-of-life care to home-bound clients and have delivered over 110,000 meals per year to people affected by HIV/AIDS in Metro Vancouver and surrounding regions.
With over 100 participating restaurants, Dining Out For Life is BC’s largest hospitality fundraiser. Over the last two decades, the event has raised upwards of $3 million with 100 percent of the proceeds underwriting the work of these two worthy charities.
Join thousands of people across Metro Vancouver as we make a difference right here in our community, one bite at a time!
