Popping culture: Summer music edition

Summertime means summer tunes and summer jams, and we’re here to give you a little bit of that and more.

First the jams.

Duke Dumont has been consistently putting out great records, from Street Walker to his most recent I Got U, but his most recent release, Won’t Look Back, sounds like a classic gay house anthem and may soon become one. Kudos.

Speaking of gay and house, Horse Meat Disco’s Severino is one of the masterminds behind this remix of Basement Jaxx’s latest release, entitled “Unicorn.”

Horse Meat Disco is just one example of the multitude of queer-focused dance ensembles/parties/soundsystems out there right now. Check out this great article in Thump/Vice by Joshua Glazer about how queers are once again driving — and reviving — dance music culture.

Also in good reads (and videos), check out this Huffington Post piece about how punk music saved a queer kid, and this Maclean’s interview with Laura Jane Grace from Against Me! talking about her transition.

But most fun of all for the summer is this video by Meghan Trainor, a body-positive track entitled “All About That Bass.”
