Canadian porn actor tackles industry myths

Max Leblanc snags a role in popular porn series

Max Leblanc lounges in a chair at an Ottawa coffee shop. He smiles a broad, toothy grin.

“My current job in government led me to do porn,” says Ottawa-born Leblanc, laughing. “I needed some fun and excitement in my life.”

Leblanc says he didn’t actively pursue a career in porn himself at first.

“I was actually contacted online by a producer after he saw some of my pictures up on a website,” says Leblanc. “He told me that he liked my look, and asked me if I wanted to try out, and do a porn scene in Toronto. Being the exhibitionist that I am, I thought about it for about probably about two seconds and was like ‘Uhh yeah, sure!'”

Leblanc is fairly new to porn, having shot about a dozen films so far. He’s approaching his one year anniversary in the industry.

Recently, Leblanc managed to snag a role in director Andre Tardiff’s latest video for the popular, Arizona-based gay porn site His First Huge Cock.

The shoot, which took place outdoors in Toronto’s muggy mid-July heat, and had Leblanc suited up in — wait for it — a teddy bear costume.

“It was a poolside shoot. In the video, the owner of the mansion is organizing a pool party, and has these two pool boys setting up before the guests arrive,” Leblanc says.

“So there I come, out of the woods in my big bear costume, and collapse on one of the pool chairs. The pool boys then just strip me down, and we start going at it.”

Sounds like fun. But Leblanc insists there is just as much work as there is play in porn. At the outdoor shoot for His First Huge Cock, the black flies were so bad that the guys ended up drenched in bug spray.

“We had to kiss and lick each other all day long — do you know how bad OFF spray tastes?” he says. “Sometimes positions are hard to keep, angles are tough to work with, and retakes have to take place because the sound isn’t perfect. It’s far from having regular sex. Doing porn is not about the model’s pleasure, it’s about what will look good on camera,” Leblanc says, pausing.

“Ok, maybe it’s a little bit about our pleasure.”

Leblanc says that he was a little surprised to discover how professional things really were during shoots. Contrary to what a lot of people think, the porn industry is not riddled with recreational drugs or erection enhancers. Oh, and apparently fluffers don’t exist on sets anymore either.

There goes my dream job.

While Leblanc only shoots porn part time as a hobby, he finds some of the myths about porn actors upsetting.

“I find that one of the biggest misconceptions is that people assume that someone who does porn is someone who has not been able to succeed anywhere else in life — that they are not intelligent enough to get a degree, or not stable enough to have a ‘proper’ full-time job,” says Leblanc, who studied at the University of Ottawa himself.

“Having come in contact with a number of performers in the industry, I’ve found out that some are engineers, some have MBAs and run successful businesses, and aren’t doing it just because they don’t have anything else to do.”

He is currently discussing contracts with executives from a couple of LA-based porn companies, is booked to film his first live sex performance at Goodhandy’s, a Toronto sex club, and has his picture splattered all over Ottawa in the Mr Leather Ottawa promos and the adverts for the Angels and Demons party during Pride.

Leblanc though, a humble public servant, doesn’t want to set any definite, time-bound goals for himself.

“After all, people say that you don’t choose to be successful in porn — the porn industry chooses you.”
