On July 25, 2026, one person was killed and at least 29 more were injured after a man drove a van into a crowd of people near events celebrating Pride in Berlin.
According to police, a white van drove into a park several hundred metres from Pride festivities near Brandenburg Gate around 10 p.m. local time and hit several people before colliding with a tree. The suspect was killed by police in a nearby Berlin suburb the following day after a nearly 24-hour search, and prosecutors said he had previously sought to join the militant group ISIS. They are treating the event as an extremist terror attack.
The event has several upcoming Prides across Canada assuring patrons of enhanced security.
The Vancouver Pride Society issued a statement on social media noting that the group is “actively working with our public safety partners to ensure Vancouver Pride continues to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone.” Fierté Montréal organizers said they will bolster security, and called for “unity within our movements to support our communities and protect the spaces that allow all people to live their identities freely, celebrate and advocate for their rights in safety.”
And organizers for Capital Pride in Ottawa also said they will have more conversations “in the coming weeks” to decide if they will strengthen or change their security measures ahead of the city’s celebrations later in August.
