Welcome to RuPaul’s Drag Race Power Rankings! Every week, we’re debriefing the week’s new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 18 to determine which queens are riding high, and which need she-mergency care. No one goes home this week, meaning we’re at top seven once again. But we must first discuss the departure of a previously underdiscussed queen …
8. Crystal (last week: ???)—ELIMINATED
I’m glad the show finally addressed Crystal’s elimination—it felt like the secret 15th queen was suddenly just gone one day. Finding out that Juicy Love Dion eliminated her to Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5” was unsurprising; Juicy is a Lip Sync Assassin, after all. But finding out she and Athena Dion got in a physical altercation? Shocking! I appreciate Jane Don’t and Kenya Pleaser for shedding some light on what happened to her. Hopefully we’ll see her on All Stars one day.
7. Discord Addams (last week: 6)
I do think that Juicy and the other queens revealing that Discord’s safety pins were not in Mandy Mango’s suitcase lost Discord a top two spot. The judges’ praise had been unreserved, even though I was personally not a huge fan of the look. No one could reasonably see it and think it was made of Mandy’s materials. Discord might as well have used her own suitcase of materials! I do think this interfered with what was probably supposed to be Discord’s first win—or, at least, first top placement before losing the lip sync to Jane—but Kenya got that honour instead. That means Discord is somehow going into Episode 11 without even a single high-scoring placement. It feels like her time is up.
6. Juicy Love Dion (last week: 7)
I liked this look from Juicy! On my personal scorecard, I’d have put her above Darlene Mitchell. What Ru called “a little trashy” felt very breezily sexy to me. There was a kind of unvarnished appeal to Juicy’s look that I appreciated. You know what else I appreciated? Juicy being the one to call Discord out on the safety pins! When she prefaced her “Who Should Go Home Tonight and Why?” statement with “Hate to do this, but …”, I knew she was going in for the kill. I was fully aligned with Myki Meeks saying “Get her, Juicy!” in her confessional afterward. You could argue rule-breaking is very drag, especially the punk kind of drag that Discord does. You know what else is drag? Calling out a queen in real time instead of behind her back. Loved it.
5. Darlene Mitchell (last week: 5)
Darlene finally got the storyline focus and praise she’s been lacking in the last couple episodes, and I think it moves her back into contention. I am obsessed with her bag of terrible wigs, and I need to know the story of how she came into possession of every single one. Darlene’s energy in the werk room is infectious, and this week, it made for much more enjoyable interactions between the queens than we’ve seen in the season so far. On the runway, I did like Darlene’s look, but a bit less than the judges did. While I liked the zebra print elements, I thought the column of black underneath was more problematic than just the shoes. To me, it looked like two phantom zebra fabric elements floating around her, instead of part of an impressive garment. A B+ week for Darlene, I’d say, but I’m still waiting for a home run.
4. Myki Meeks (last week: 2)
Though I don’t think she was in real contention for the win, I do think her outfit kept Myki’s hot streak alive this week. Ever since she was rated last in Rate-a-Queen, Myki has done everything she can to guarantee she won’t land in that spot again. I like the feistiness! And I don’t blame her for any of my issues with her garment this week—she just had unfortunate materials from Briar Blush for the challenge prompt. Unlike in other cases, I don’t think this was sabotage from Briar; how would she know the category for this particular look would be “party”? Myki figured out a smart solution, though; I loved the aprés ski idea, especially the muff. Again, not a top three contender, but basically exactly what Myki needed to do at this juncture.
3. Nini Coco (last week: 4)
Another week with a top two, another week where Nini just barely misses out on lip syncing for the win. While in the talent show, Nini missed the boat by not jumping to Week 2, there wasn’t really anything she could’ve done this week. In fact, had the queens not dragged Discord for bending the rules, I think Nini wouldn’t have even been in the top three. I did like her look this week, and I understood why she wanted to go with the really remarkable print DD Fuego left for her. But while I liked the orange on her legs, I thought the peek of colour at the crop was actually a mistake (though Iman liked it, so what the fuck do I know?). I would’ve preferred her keep the crop bare, just to allow the outfit a bit of space to breathe. Still, a very good effort from Nini, and she once again got high praise from Ru in deliberations. She’s still in this, even though I’m still suspicious of her edit after last week.
2. Kenya Pleaser (last week: 3)
I’m so thrilled for Kenya! She really did nail the brief this week. When Iman said she looked like “the life of the party,” I couldn’t agree more: there was a vibrance and an energy to this look that really elevated it beyond being “just” a bodysuit. It might be the best disco look we’ve ever seen on the show? And once again, Kenya styled herself to perfection. I appreciated Carson Kressley noticing how period-accurate and perfectly matched her cheek glow was—Kenya maybe doesn’t get enough credit for having one of the best mugs of the season. She handled the lip sync well enough, but she was facing an unleashed Jane having the time of her life. It wasn’t particularly close. Still, I love Kenya, and I love to watch her succeed. Let this be the start of her comeback, I beg!
1. Jane Don’t (last week: 1)
When you perform a miracle on the Drag Race stage, it makes sense that you’d be rewarded for your efforts. While I liked other outfits on the runway more, I do think Jane’s recovery from what Ciara Myst left her was nothing short of incredible. Michelle Visage was right to praise all the applique, but I actually worried it would distract the judges from Jane basically making her own textile. Luckily, Ru shouted it out, and I think the combination of the two—plus some impressive styling—got Jane the top placement. It was so delightful watching Jane just have fun in the lip sync; her energy was entirely different, and she tore into the song. While I don’t love that Jane is on her third win (and ninth top placement) while queens like Kenya and Darlene are still waiting on their first win, I thought this week, her victory was pretty undeniable. Again, I think the ending of this season might be much more obvious than it seems: while other girls lose, Jane Don’t.
