Humpback whale intercourse observed for first time—and it was between two males

A new paper shows that an encounter between two males in January 2022 is the first documented instance of humpback whale sex

Humpback whales were observed getting it on for the very first time … and it was two males!

New research from the Pacific Whale Foundation published in the journal Marine Mammal Science confirms that the whales, spotted in January 2022 by a boat off the coast of Hawaii, were having sexual relations. And that both whales involved were male. It marks a groundbreaking discovery in humpback whale research, but also another entry in the long list of animals with observed homosexual behaviour.

Senior editor Mel Woods breaks down this historic finding for gay whale lovers everywhere. Talk about “Humpback Mountain”!
