CSIS warns of anti-LGBTQ2S+ violence in Canada

Top intelligence agency warns the “anti-gender movement” could inspire anti-LGBTQ2S+ violence

Canada’s top intelligence agency, CSIS, is warning the “anti-gender movement” could inspire acts of violence against the LGBTQ2S+ community.

In an email statement to the CBC this week, CSIS spokesperson Eric Balsam said, “Anti-2SLGBTQl+ narratives remain a common theme in violent rhetoric espoused by white nationalists, neo-Nazis, the Freedom Movement, and networks such as Diagolon and QAnon.”

According to a document CBC acquired through an access to information request, the Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre has been monitoring threats to Pride events and queer venues.

Xtra Magazine’s senior editor Mel Woods explains how anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric leads to anti-LGBTQ+ violence.
