Despite being part of the collective acronym LGBT, trans people tend to have their voices marginalized in the debate. Which confuses me. Yes, gender identity and sexual orientation are two different things, but ultimately we’re all in the same boat of not fitting in with a hetero- and cis-normative society and actively seeking universal equality. There may be something of a divide, but still, we’re both part of the same community.
Which is why I’m happy to hear that GLAAD is putting together a campaign called I AM: Trans People Speak, where famous trans individuals speak out about themselves and their journeys. Yes, I’ll be the first to admit that GLAAD doesn’t always stick the landing, but I like where they’re going with this, and I look forward to seeing more inclusion of trans voices in the grand scheme of things.
