Sourcing and Methodology

In the story “Facing new accusations, Pride Toronto allegedly forged at least one signature on $1 million grant application,” Xtra contributor Krishna Rau reviewed documents used by Pride Toronto to secure a $1 million grant from Canada’s federal government. The public records, obtained by Tom Hooper, an assistant professor in the department of equity studies at York University in Toronto, included the grant application, staff wage statements from Pride, an interim project report from Pride and interim grant payment reports from the federal government. Rau then made multiple attempts via multiple means to contact all people whose names appeared on the grant application in a bid to assess public allegations that signatures had been forged. Most did not respond and only one directly addressed the allegation.
