MADDIN MAD

A highlight of the Rendezvous With Madness fest is a showcase of honorary queer Guy Maddin, an all-day retrospective of the Winnipeg-based filmmaker — who’s moving to New York — on the closing Saturday. Maddin will participate in the three panel discussions accompanying each screening.

At 1:30pm on Nov 18 at the Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) is Inspired Afflictions: Facts And Mythologies featuring Maddin’s 1988 cult classic Tales From The Gimli Hospital and his 2004 short Sombra Dolorosa.

Later, at 4pm at the Workman Theatre, is Triangle Tales: Maddin On Mad Love, with the 1995 short Odilon Redon, Heart Of The World from 2006 and the 1992 feature Careful. The closing gala (7:30pm, Workman), Down Memory Lane, features the 2003 autobiographical film, Coward Bend The Knee, Maddin’s very first film The Dead Father (in 1985 Maddin held his first-ever public film screening in a Winnipeg hospital) and one of his most recent films, My Dad Is A Hundred Years Old, written and starring Isabella Rosellini in a loving, genderbending tribute to her father, filmmaker Roberto Rosellini.
