Trans petition presented

The Trans Alliance Society’s (TAS) petition to add gender identity and gender expression to the BC Human Rights Code was introduced in the BC legislature Feb 23.

Shane Simpson, MLA for Vancouver-Hastings, presented 743 signatures to his colleagues in Victoria.

“Unfortunately,” he says, “the way that petitions work [is that] I get the opportunity to submit the petition and to make some brief comments around the petition, but there’s not going to be a dialogue there after that.”

Still, Simpson hopes to promote discourse between TAS representatives and government officials after raising the issues on record.

“My goal, from a personal point, was just to reignite this discussion,” says TAS chair Raigen D’Angelo.

Simpson advises trans activists to use the upcoming election period to try and secure commitments from individual candidates and their parties.
