Is CGI gay porn the next big thing, or is it just a novelty?

High production costs pose serious limitations, but the mind's the limit for visionary directors

While you could arguably jerk off to the sexy creatures in Avatar, the much-talked-about, super-expensive, heavy-CGI film from Hollywood, another company has created the first gay all-CGI hardcore porn. Pirate’s Booty, a gay porn parody of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean came out last year. And the director is a chick — the fascinating Wendy Crawford, president of Adult Source Media (ASM), a company she runs with her husband.

Crawford started ASM in 2004, licensing animated erotica from Japan. While they still license from Japan, Pirate’s Booty was created from scratch to satisfy the more piggish needs of ASM’s gay consumers. Here’s what Crawford has to say:

“Gays want hardcore. Penetration, pounding, facials, guys just being dirty, filthy whores. So we are committed to making it… and it rocks.”

She hired a team of mainstream CGI artists, mostly from the video-game sector, and spent a couple hundred thousand dollars to create a high-tech, full-on gay sex fest. It took 10 months.

Though I usually fast-forward through porn, I watched this one in its entirety. It’s 60 minutes long, and the quality is exquisite. As someone who shoots live-action porn, I know how much of a struggle it is to get good penetration shots without shoving a light up someone’s ass or otherwise ruining the mood. In Pirate’s Booty, the angles are flawless. Every ass fuck is perfectly captured. While the bottom is getting pounded, his cock jiggles up and down hyper-realistically.

There’s comedy in this movie, but it’s no art film. Crawford wastes no time on silly plot structures and gets right to the action. The star of the movie is Captain Jack Swallows, who loves sodomizing his little blond, straight cabin boy. Sample dialogue:

“Captain sir, we’re down to the last rations of rum and biscuits. What do you want me to do?”

“Eat my ass.” Followed by some hardcore sex.

The most important question for me, though, was, “Can I jerk off to this? Will CGI porn become big, or is it just a novelty?” Crawford thinks there is a future in it — ASM hopes to release two titles each year.

I could have jerked off to it, if I wasn’t sitting there taking notes, but it wasn’t the type of porn I’d return to personally, because I couldn’t learn anything personal about the models. Because, well, there were no models. They were all computer graphics. And for me, I need to get a sense of the sexual energy of a model to be turned on. That’s why porn is often so disposable — there is so much of it out there, you need quantity. You need to fall for a certain model and then see that model in 50 different scenes with different guys. But the high cost of doing CGI means it’s got some serious limitations.

But I could see another application for CGI porn: celebrity licensing. If there was a Cristiano Ronaldo CGI porn with a hyper-realistic Ronaldo fucking David Beckham up the ass — I could jerk off to that.

In any case, Pirate’s Booty is an interesting creation from a visionary lady director who admitted to me: “The sex scenes? They all came from my head.”
