Sexy indie bands at Canadian music fest

Dragonette headlines Toronto queer showcase

Sex, love and Canadian music, anyone?

The Slacker Canadian Music Fest returns to Toronto this month with a packed program that promises something for everyone.

“I think we have 1,013 acts and close to 300 individual shows,” says Cameron Wright, festival director.

Among the acts tagged for queer content are Dragonette, Young Empires and Eric Soloman. Though not gay, they are queer-friendly and playing the Proud FM Showcase on Fri, March 23 at The Hoxton.

As for what makes queer content, Wright, who is gay, says, “We definitely don’t ask acts if they are gay.”

Other acts include Fefe Dobson, Light Fires, Martha Wainwright, Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party and Victoria Duffield.

“I’m most excited for a band called The Rubberbandits,” Wright says. “They are this big gay iconic thing in Ireland.”

A whole lot of sexy indie rockers are coming to Toronto for the festival. So get out your longshoreman caps and grow some stubble.

In the Xtra interview below, Lucas Silveira of The Cliks talks to Wright about other acts to check out. For more on the Canadian Music Fest, click here.
