Perfume Genius on casting a pornstar in a music video

Hot indie musician plays Toronto

Perfume Genius, the stage name of indie musician Mike Hadreas, isn’t what springs to mind when you think of a hard-ass YouTube renegade. But after Hadreas posted the music video for his single “Hood” (off his recently released second album, Put Your Back N 2 It), that’s what he became.

YouTube initially labelled the video, which also featured pornstar Arpad Miklos, unsafe for family viewing. But that label was later recanted after fans and music industry insiders said the ban showed a double standard.

Xtra chatted with Hadreas (below) while he was in Toronto for a show at The Drake. For more on Perfume Genius, click here.

On occasion, the number of editors and other staff who contribute to a story gets a little unwieldy to give a byline to everyone.
