While there is lots happening in the great outdoors this winter in Ottawa, there is also a fair bit happening in the great indoors, including several LGBT-themed movies screening in the coming month.
One of the most interesting is God Loves Uganda, a documentary by Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams. (Our interview with Williams appears directly above this article.) The film looks at the influence of Christian evangelicals in creating the homophobic atmosphere that exists in the country and the anti-gay legislation that’s being threatened. God Loves Uganda screens Feb 11 at the Library and Archives Canada, in the main auditorium, as part of the Free Thinking Film Festival.
I Am Divine, a documentary about the iconic drag queen, will screen at the Mayfair Theatre beginning Jan 29. The bio-doc includes interviews with John Waters, Tab Hunter and Michael Musto.
Also on tap at the Mayfair is Dallas Buyers Club. The Oscar-nominated film focuses on a hard-living straight Texan trapped in the gay community during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. The film had its North American premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. It opens in Ottawa on Jan 31.
