Australia’s ruling Liberal party has dropped its prime minister, Tony Abbott, who repeatedly blocked marriage equality bills, and replaced him with pro-equality MP Malcolm Turnbull.

Tom Hardy shuts down sexuality question
Actor Tom Hardy reacted icily to a question about his sexuality from a Daily Xtra reporter at the Toronto International Film Festival. Hardy plays two twins, one of them bisexual, in a new movie Legend. When asked about his own sexuality, however, he bluntly asked the reporter why he was asking, and then shut down the exchange. Russian President Vladimir Putin has given one of the country’s highest civilian honours to inveterately anti-gay lawmaker Vitaly Milonov, praising him for “active lawmaking efforts and many years of honest work.” That work includes crafting Russia’s notorious gay propaganda laws. Musician Elton John, meanwhile, said in a BBC interview he wants to meet with Putin to discuss gay rights.

Parental monitoring software built into Windows 10 could out gay kids who look for information online, says Pink News. The operating system allows parents with family accounts to snoop into their children’s browsing history, even if the children browse anonymously.
Lesbian films are having a moment
Lesbian filmmaking is on the verge of having its “Brokeback Mountain moment,” says the New York Times. Julianne Moore and Ellen Page’s Freeheld and Cate Blanchett’s Carol are serious Oscar contenders, and are breaking lesbian stories into popular cinema.
