I remember a couple years ago, I told my cousin I was gay, and his response was “Well, that’s cool, bud. When did you decide that?” The intentions were right, but the knowledge wasn’t there. So I explained to him that no, it wasn’t a choice, I was just made like that. There was no switch I could throw on and off at whim.
“Well, at least you don’t ever have to worry about getting anyone pregnant,” he responded. Once again: the heart is there, but the brain is still missing.
The fact of the matter is that straight men will never understand what it’s like to be gay. They can empathize, sure, but people can understand the world only as they perceive it through their own experiences. Which is why this short movie by Jakub Roman succeeds as well as it does. By envisioning a world where homosexuality is the norm and heterosexuality is the minority: it allows people to empathize with the other side. And really, that’s the most anyone can do.
