Queer people use social media more than straights: Pew study

If you find that you are being poked by more gays than straights on Facebook, that’s because a recent study by the Pew Research Center finds that queer people use social media more than our hetero counterparts.

According to the study, published by Media Post, 80 percent of queer people say they use social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, compared to 58 percent of the general American public and 68 percent of American internet users.

When asked why they love tweeting and posting, 55 percent of queer adults and 69 percent of gay men say they have met new friends online.

But when it comes to using social media sites as platforms to discuss queer issues, surprisingly, 83 percent say they do not discuss queer issues online
