Truro, Nova Scotia — where Mayor Bill Mills crusades against rainbow flags and park sex — has realized it has an image problem. Imagine that!
The town’s latest moment of self-reflection follows two events:
- Someone created a Facebook page that now has 500+ members: Welcome to Truro, World’s Largest Retirement Village.
- MoneySense’s “Best Places to Live” survey ranked Truro 160th out of 179 Canadian cities and towns.
The Chronicle Herald has a rundown of the debate in its article, “Truro’s image creating a buzz these days, for the wrong reasons.” They note some “high-profile body slams” to Truro’s reputation, including Mills’ anti-gay comments.
Truro Mayor Bill Mills
Just what has Mills said about gays? Some of his headline-grabbing comments:
- In 2007, on raising the Pride flag at town hall: “If I have a group of people that says pedophiles should have rights, do we raise their flag too?” and “God says I’m not in favour of that and I have to look at it and say, I guess I’m not either.”
-
In 2009, he drew fire for singling out gay guys who cruise Truro’s Victoria Park: “They go up and have a rendezvous and then they go into the woods
and do their thing. It’s been known for years and years and is becoming
more and more of a problem.”
So Truro, if you want to start fixing the “image problem,” start at the top. Ditch Bill Mills!
