the same old scenario: an old, white-haired dude saying dumb things about gay
marriage.
This time it’s Newt Gingrich, a Republican presidential candidate.
The Des Moines Register
quotes Gingrich as saying, “I believe that marriage is between a man and woman.
It has been for all of recorded history and I think this is a temporary
aberration that will dissipate. I think that it just fundamentally goes
against everything we know.”
Oh please. This is coming from a man who has been married
three times.
Gingrich reportedly made the
statement in response to a question from an audience member at an event he held
at a Best Western hotel in Iowa. Iowa, by the way, is one of the six states in the US where
same-sex marriage is legal.
This is not the first time Gingrich has spoken against marriage equality.
In June, Reuters reported
Gingrich’s response to New York’s adoption of same-sex marriage: “I think we are drifting towards a terrible muddle, which I
think is going to be very, very difficult and painful to work our way out of. I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. I think
that’s what marriage ought to be, and I would like to find ways to defend that
view as legitimately and effectively as possible.”
