A bill to further criminalize homosexuality is reportedly in the works in The Gambia, Pink News reports. The measure aims to ban LGBT rights organizations, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
The Gambia’s minister of presidential affairs is quoted as saying that the western African country will not import Western culture “in exchange for foreign aid.”
President Yahya Jammeh, who has in the past referred to gay people as “vermin,” is expected to support the measure if it is introduced in parliament.
Under current legislation, both men and women can be jailed for having consensual same-sex relations.
