VIDEO: Laverne Cox becomes first transgender Emmy nominee

Orange Is the New Black actress spoke with Daily Xtra just days before the announcement

Trans actress Laverne Cox was in Toronto for Bent Lens: Pride on Screen, a joint TIFF/Inside Out Film Festival program in celebration of WorldPride. Cox took time to speak with us about Orange Is the New Black and to give us a scoop on Season 3 of the hit Netflix show. Despite her fame, Cox still experiences transphobia.

Laverne Cox has become the first transgender actor to receive an Emmy nomination. Cox is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. In the above video, Cox talks with Daily Xtra about her work and her ongoing struggle against transphobia.

The show’s star, Taylor Schilling, who was interviewed by Daily Xtra in 2013, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Orange Is the New Black received a total of 12 nominations.

The Emmy Awards air Monday, Aug 25 on NBC.
