Thom Fitzgerald’s Cloudburst opens Canadian Film Fest

Lesbian flick stars Olympia Dukakis

The Canadian Film Fest kicks off in Toronto on March 28 with director Thom Fitzgerald’s new film, Cloudburst.

Shot in Nova Scotia, it stars Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker as a lesbian couple who leave their nursing home in the US and travel north to Canada to get married. Along the way they pick up a hitchhiker, played by rising Canadian star Ryan Doucette.

Cloudburst opened the 26th BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and had its Canadian debut at the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax.

Fitzgerald is best known for his first film, The Hanging Garden. Other works include Beefcake, The Event and 3 Needles.
