Rocking a long weekend

Art, music and pride

It’s going to be a long weekend featuring art, walking the streets in rainbow attire, strutting to soul music and getting to know your neighbours.

On Friday July 29, the Big Art Party at the Patrick John Mills Gallery kicks off the weekend with music, dance and live art. The dress code is unabashedly “sexy,” but the party code is fun, fun and more fun. The festivities begin with live music followed by a dance performance, poetry readings and live art in action with Ali Szetepa and Stefan Thompson. For those more interested in cinematic art, short films are being screened in the garden until the clock strikes midnight.

On Saturday July 30, the rainbow flags will be flying in Brockville. The group Fight Homophobia in Brockville! will be at the forefront of the town’s first Pride walk. Marchers will walk through the town before making their way to a park, where the festivities will begin with a potluck dinner, live music and, since the park is on the edge of the water, swimming.

On Saturday night, Ottawa’s DJ Chris Murray will take control of Flamingo’s strut night. He plans to take guests on a soulful stroll.

Chinatown springs to life on Sunday with a new arts initiative, Yards of Chinatown. The UnderBelly Artists Collective will be celebrating the vibrant neighbourhood by connecting artists, musicians and performers with residents of Chinatown. There will be art for sale, thumping music and a good old barbecue.

Sunday evening once again features Montreal’s weekly summer electronic music festival in Gatineau. Piknic Electronik will be playing at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The evening features local and national DJs.
