Restorative Soup. Momma Knows.

While thinking of the perfect thing to post for today’s entry, I thought to myself “Lina. What is intrinsically Canadian, cold-weather-oriented and distinctly queer?” And myself answered “Soup and ginger tisane. OBVI.” So, today is soup—demain is tisane/tea.

So here are some soups from around the way. Some oldies, but most keepies-for-life-ies.

Pomegranate Lentil Soup
[source: the kitchn]

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 cups diced onion
1/2 cup diced carrot
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 1/2 cups brown lentils, picked over and rinsed

1 1/2 cups finely chopped chard
6 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice*
1 large pomegranate, de-seeded

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and carrot and sauté until onion is translucent.
Add cumin and coriander and sauté for another minute.
Add lentils, chard, water, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and stir to
combine. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until lentils are
tender, about 30 minutes.
Stir in pomegranate juice and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Season to taste with salt and pepper.
To serve, ladle soup into bowls and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds.

And here are some Ginger cardamon and pepper cookies. Because I love you. Through your stomache.

PS, Do you have someone to talk to? Do you feel heard? Cared for? Listened to? Supported? Are you thinking about your dreams? Do your dreams inspire you to be a better person? Do you wish you could lay your face onto a pair of heaving, restful, “thereforyou” bosoms. I want to be that person. Let me be that person to you. I want to be your 1-800-emergency-call-a-lot when you’re scared, scarred, fearful, fitful, pitiful, doubtful or sad. I can be trusted. I love you. Through and around your stomache. Because that’s WASSUP.

PPS, The soup portion of this post is dedicated to my neighbour, Rina. Don’t ask questions.
