Out in Toronto: March 24-30, 2016

Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, March 24

The Judas Kiss

Why did Oscar Wilde allow himself to be arrested and charged (which would ultimately lead to his death) rather than flee the country? In its North American premiere, a play about Wilde’s short time at the Cadogan Hotel and the period after his release from prison features Rupert Everett and Billy Costa.

Runs until Sunday, May 1, various showtimes. The Ed Mirvish Theatre, 244 Victoria St. mirvish.com

Central Canada Drummer Fetish Weekend

Bikers, truckers, construction workers, sailors — this kinky, fetishy weekend is dedicated to all the hyper-masculine macho men out there. It includes the step-down of the previous title holders, and the competition for the new Drummer and Drummerboy. There’s everything from brunch to sex parties (and maybe sex brunch).

Runs until Sunday, March 27. For more info, visit centralcanadadrummer.com.

Viva Cabaret

Yury Ruzhyev must be obsessed with divas, because he’s been doing this one-man impersonation show for a decade now. In his cabaret-style show, this whirlwind of a performer transforms into Liza, Tina, Cher, Madonna, Gaga and others, in terms of costumes, movements and music. His performance is followed by dancing.

8pm. The Rivoli, 334 Queen St W. For more info, visit Facebook.

Friday, March 25

iBlithe

Folks see how Rosemary Doyle has reinvented Noël Coward’s play Blithe Spirit for the digital age. It’s the story of a man, Charles Condomine, who invites an eccentric psychic into his home to conduct a séance. He hopes to find information for a book he’s writing, but he ends up being haunted by the ghost of his wife.

Runs until Saturday, April 2, 8pm. Red Sandcastle Theatre, 922 Queen St E. redsandcastletheatre.com

Saturday, March 26

Toastr Visits The Rum Exchange

This lesbian party is packing up its cats, singular hairstyles and hot girls, and heading out to various venues across the city. This time around, they’ve landed in The Rum Exchange for a party that’s wall to wall women. DJs Lucie Tic and Sticky Cuts spin. As billing says, “You’re going to love this space. And if you don’t, well I don’t know what to tell you.”

9:30pm. The Rum Exchange, 67 Richmond St W. facebook.com/toastrto

Sunday, March 27

The Original Crush

I’d Tap That throws an almost excessively sex-positive party and social. It’s got a whole lot of cutesy and hot activities to help attendees break the ice and hook up, including the Crushboard, where you can leave notes for people you find cute; games of Spin the Bottle; and so-called cupids delivering notes from you to prospective fuck mates. Oh, and there’s dancing.

8pm. The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St W.

Sapphic Aquatica

Women and transgender folks strip down, get on towels (or sexy costumes) and spend the night flirting and fucking. The venue includes various rooms, and a hot tub and heated outdoor pool. When you’re not swimming under the stars, enjoy a boudoir photography workshop or Miss Behave’s twerking performance inside.

8pm. Oasis Aqualounge, 231 Mutual St. oasisaqualounge.com

(Editor’s note, March 31, 2016: An earlier version of this story stated that Billy Costa starred in Judas Kiss. He does not.)

Jeremy Willard is a Toronto-based freelance writer and editor. He's written for Fab Magazine, Daily Xtra and the Torontoist. He generally writes about the arts, local news and queer history (in History Boys, the Daily Xtra column that he shares with Michael Lyons).
