NXNE kicks off with 1,000 bands

Xtra chats with Megan Lane

NXNE takes over most of Toronto’s clubs from June 11 to 17. The event boasts 1,000 bands, but who has the time to go through the list to pick out the hidden gems?

For queer content, check out indie dance-rock band The DA, Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, experimental indie-rock band Archery Guild, the more lyrically oriented Lakes of Canada and the all-female alt-rock band Mad June.

There’s also Megan Lane, a Saskatchewan born lesbian artist who plays the blues and rock but isn’t afraid of wearing the rainbow. She finds that it helps make a connection.

“People who may not normally be a part of a queer community or really be stand-offish to queer people – like in a blues bar in small town Alberta – once they have that connection with the music it really opens up the door,” says Lane.

Lane sat down with Lucas Silveira of The Cliks to talk about her upcoming album and NXNE.

Lane plays Cherry Cola’s Rock N’ Rolla Cabaret Lounge on Thurs, June 13.

Below is Lane’s interview with Silveira. Music played at the beginning of the interview comes from Lane’s upcoming album with Hawksley Workman.
