New York City’s Pride parade is always a raucous celebration, but this year, Pride revellers sang, danced and marched through the streets on June 30, buoyed by the recent victories before the US Supreme Court. Only four days earlier, the high court ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional and effectively quashed California’s Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage.

At age 84, Edie Windsor, the plaintiff in the now historic DOMA challenge United States vs Windsor, was ecstatic to be one of three grand marshals for the New York parade, alongside singer Harry Belafonte and Earl Fowlkes, president and CEO of the Center for Black Equity.
