Centretown Movies screens How to Survive a Plague

Significant HIV/AIDS doc co-presented by AIDS Committee of Ottawa

Centretown’s Dundonald Park will host a showing of one of the most important documentaries of the last decade on HIV/AIDS as part of Centretown Movies on Friday, Aug 2.

David France’s How to Survive a Plague chronicles the grassroots actions of HIV/AIDS advocacy groups ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group) throughout the 1980s and ‘90s.

The AIDS Committee of Ottawa (ACO) is co-presenting the doc. Zaheen Karim, ACO’s women’s outreach coordinator, says the film has the power to “rouse people into action.”

“A lot of people are thinking that HIV, now that it is a very manageable condition, is no longer something that we have to think about anymore, whether that’s in the gay community or other communities,” Karim says. “But I think what the film was meant to do is to remind people that nothing is won without a struggle and that we still have a lot of struggle left to continue on with.”
