After 22 years of catering to Ottawa’s gay and lesbian bookworms, After Stonewall is officially up for sale.
David Rimmer founded the literary establishment in 1990, but in the two decades since he set up shop he has seen profits shrink and become as thin as the printed page.
Big-box retailers and the advent of the Kindle are just two of the reasons several independent bookstores can’t seem to climb out of the red.
Rimmer says that if he can’t find a buyer, he will retire and After Stonewall will be “dead and gone.”
Mark Christie, of Goldleaf Realty, is handling the sale and says the historical business has enormous potential for a savvy business person willing to take on the challenge.
“There’s so much potential there with what exists and with new technology and new products,” Christie says.
“Our goal is ultimately to get someone to come in there with some fresh money and some fresh ideas and spruce up what’s there. They can make it into a much better member of that particular part of the city.”
The current asking price is $39,049 plus stock.
