A festive queer party

Amber Thorpe wanted to do something different.

Thorpe and her friend/co-conspirator Jenny Hoben decided that they wanted to throw a party. A big one. “Jenny and I were sitting around talking about how there are different kinds of gay parties in every city but here,” Thorpe says via email. The duo are putting on their own party this Friday night, Dec 9, at Michael’s Bar & Grill on Young St. Entitled “Homo for the Holidays,” the event will play host to a gaggle of DJs as well as local electro queen Jenocide.

Thorpe has a habit of creating her own spaces and opportunities. Here in Nova Scotia, she helped organize (and continues to do so) the Maritime Tattoo Festival, runs Adept Tattoos and has also been instrumental in pushing the province to regulate tattoo parlors. Amber plans on making events like this one, through her company b*tchfit productions, a bimonthly event.

This weekend’s party will also be a fundraiser for the Youth Project, Halifax’s queer youth organization. In keeping with that youthful spirit and energy, Thorpe plans to host three-legged races at the event and is not averse to hosting all kinds of silly games in the future. “We do have a few surprises for everyone, so I can’t disclose everything,” she teases.
