Fun Home wins best musical at Tonys
Broadway musical Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel about her relationship with her closeted father, has won best musical, best performance by a leading actor, best direction of a musical, best original score and best book of a musical, at the 2015 Tony Awards. Fun Home is also the first Broadway musical with a lesbian main character.
UK feminists unimpressed by Caitlyn Jenner
Two UK feminists have piled onto trans Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, following conservative columnist Richard Littlejohn’s disparagements early this week. At the Sunday Times, feminist writer Julie Burchill said Jenner’s transition was selfish, not brave and did not deserve any attention. Feminist activist Julie Bindel, meanwhile, turned down the Times’ request for an interview, pointedly saying she didn’t want to suffer “another 11 years of McCarthyite bullying, threats, no platforming, vilification, misrepresentation, false accusations, and my work on sexual violence towards women and girls being under threat.”
Kiev holds short-lived, violent pride march
A pride march in Kiev ended half an hour after it began June 6, after counter-protesters threw fireworks, knives and explosives. Four marchers and nine police officers were injured, and 25 attackers were arrested.
Alaska Airlines offers Pride discount
Alaska airlines is offering discounts for flights to popular Pride destinations, a promotion that has caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth among right-wing activists. You don’t have to be gay to take advantage of the promotion, but that didn’t stop accusations of discrimination, Marxism and deviance.
Korean police ban gay pride parade
Korean police have rejected an application for a gay pride parade in Seoul later this month, but activist at the Korean Queer Culture Festival say the march will go ahead regardless. Police turned down the application over fears that Christian counter-protesters would cause disturbances.
