On the long list of things that can go horribly wrong on your wedding day, getting fired for marrying your long-time partner ranks pretty high up there. It doesn’t sound particularly likely, but it’s still pretty horrible.
And yet, that’s allegedly what happened to Tippi McCullough, a school teacher at Mount St Mary Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas. According to the Daily Mail, McCullough received a phone call from the school’s principal on her wedding day informing her that she was being fired, saying, “I never thought this day would come, but I have to terminate you.” Once again: ON HER WEDDING DAY.
McCullough was also allegedly offered a “glowing” letter of recommendation, as well as the opportunity to voluntarily resign, which I’m sure would have been super kind of them if it weren’t for the fact that they were firing her on her wedding day because they didn’t agree with gay marriage seriously what the hell.
Look, I have no idea what the definition of “traditional” marriage is, mostly because the Bible liked to play it fast and loose on the concept — seriously, read the Bible sometime; it’s fucked up — but I’m pretty sure this does nothing to honour it. Ruining someone else’s wedding day because you disagree with it doesn’t give you the moral high ground. It makes you some asshole who fired someone during her wedding for no discernible reason whatsoever. Your world doesn’t magically get better because you made someone else’s worse.
