“Statistically speaking . . . one of them probably is [gay],” Lance Bass tells David Rubin on The Rubin Report. “But it’s crazy with a market like that because [it’s] 100% young women and they fantasise about these guys and then you have the record labels and everyone [is] grooming you to make sure you don’t even mention you have a girlfriend . . . so screw the fact that you are going to come out as being gay – it ruins their whole business plan.”
Would it really hurt One Direction if one of the members came out as gay? It probably wouldn’t change anything. Straight girls often have crushes on gay guys. It might make them want him even more. Don’t we always want what we can’t have?
If the label is scared it’ll alienate One Direction’s fan base if there’s an out gay member, they’re neglecting to realize that gays are fantasizing about those twinks just as much as the girls are. Don’t forget about the gays — or our money! It’s been reported by OutThink marketing research that queer consumers are an $800 billion “dream market.”
