BY NOREEN FAGAN – For Donald Trump it’s an easy comparison: long putters are
unattractive and so is gay marriage.
In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said, “It’s
like in golf, a lot of people — I don’t want this to sound trivial — but a lot
of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive. It’s
weird. You see these great players with these really long putters, because they
can’t sink three-footers anymore. And, I hate it. I am a traditionalist. I have
so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist.”
Seriously?
It is amusing that someone with such a shockingly bad flock of
hair thinks he can make such statements and get away with it. In the
past few weeks, Trump has built up a reputation for saying whatever he likes as
long as the ratings for his reality show, Celebrity Apprentice, go up.
Trump’s insistent accusation that President Obama wasn’t born
in the United States was squashed when Obama released his birth certificate.
Now, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has
responded to Trump’s latest anti-gay-marriage statement by launching an online
petition — A Pledge to Tune out Trump.
Media reports from around the world have been less than
flattering about Trump’s remarks. One of my favourites — which all seem
to be in the sports sections of news sites — includes a report from NBC sports,
which says “if Trump was a racehorse he would have been put down by now.”
